Handmade Dumplings

You thought I made them right!! ^^

Anyway, before coming to Asia, my perception of Asian food was limited to sushi, some soup, but mostly dumplings. So imagine how happy I was when I went to this restaurant for lunch yesterday: Din Tai Fung

I love dumplings and this place make handsome handmade dumplings, which is kind of cool…check it out below.

The menu is in Chinese, and the restaurant proposes a lot of dishes. Lucky enough I have Mandarin-speaking colleagues, hence we tried plenty of dishes, but below are my most preferred: Simple basic dumplings.

Steamed Pork Buns, and Steamed Crab Meat & Pork Dumplings

These were really tasty; the one on the back is made of a doughnut type of mixture with meat inside. This, accompanied with spicy sauce, and some vegetables was delicious. Smallest dumplings (on the front) were very fragile lol. They contained some sauce in the bottom, so one needed to be careful when taking one.

Overall it was a great experience having lunch there, it’s definitely a must go if you’re in town. This is their website: www.dintaifung.com.sg

Hock Lam Beef

Hock Lam Beef is a restaurant to check in Singapore; indeed, the place is apparently a century old which for a country only 49 years old is quite amazing!!

Anyway I went there last week to check their famous dish: teachew beef kway teow. It is basically a beef broth with a choice of noodle and beef served with a soup or dry.

My choice resulted to this…

Not bad huh!! Overall the dish was good, but no biggie. What I liked most was the beef; it included tender, fat, and chewy slices. I had to chew it for a good five min before swallowing it, I loved it. haha

One last thing though, for a place that old I would have expect some sort of history/legacy spirit in their decoration, service, or else. But none of that, I thought it was disappointing.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

Yesterday for lunch I tried one of apparently famous meal here in Singapore called hainanese chicken rice also known as roasted chicken rice at this place in downtown Singapore.

I went for the one on the far left. (Just a note aside, I found those pictures always amazing; they really make you drool and feel hungry :-)).

My plate was actually made of roasted steamed chicken (right on the picture below) with some pieces of grilled pork (left side), accompanied by yam rice hence the brown color, and vegetables. FYI, I chose steamed chicken simply because my Singaporean mate picked it too ;-).

It was good food although I thought it was a bit greasy and the portion too small. Nonetheless, for the price (S$4.5) and the promptness of the service, it will definitely be one of my favorite meals to go for quick lunch.

Gogi Gui

Last week for diner my roommate, a friend of her, and myself went for a Gogi Gui or some call it Korean barbecue :). It was in Korea town, an area near Tanjong Pagar in Central Singapore.

There were a lot of restaurants, and since this one was not so busy we decided to check in…

So let me step back a bit here; for those of you that don’t know what Korean bbq is, it’s basically Korean restaurants where dishes are prepared at the diner’s table on gas or charcoal grills built into the table itself.

We ordered the following…

Actually we only ordered meats (pork) and it all came with regular bachan or sides dishes.

(From left to right) Lettuce with black sesame | Kimchi, some white radish seasoned with salt and some other sauce (it is a must have dishes in any Korean charcoal restaurant) | fish paste.

Pickles | onions sauces | sesame oil/korean bbq sauce | Namul, it’s basically marinated vegetables with sesame oil, salt, garlic, and again some others stuff.

OK, next step is to grill

…then wrap up the meat and your chosen sides in the salad…

…and then well, just smAsh it in your mouth!!!

Yum! I have tried few of those Korean bbq, I remember having my first one in Korea town in New York with my friend Maréva. As far as I remember it was very good, here overall it was an “ok towards good” experience. Still, I particularly liked the Kimchi, especially after it being grilled; the onions sauce was also pretty tasty, perfect sauce for both the salad and the meat.

Ah almost forgot, one must be dry after this…nothing better than a fresh cold beer from from from?!…..Korea (like deuh).
